A Decade of Germany in Brisbane!

Brisbane German Week is celebrating its 10th birthday in 2025!

Get ready for another round of inspiration, fun, and meaningful connections. Brisbane German Week offers something for everyone - from language and trivia lovers, science buffs to business professionals and Oktoberfest fans. Brisbane German Week is a series of events showcasing the rich spectrum of collaborations between our two countries. We are delighted to present you the highlights across education, business and economy, science and innovation, arts, culture - but most of all news, connection and networking. We will bring you established events such as the Science and Innovation Day with the latest updates on joint research outcomes as well as the Business Day featuring the German-Australian Chamber (AHK), iGABA - innovative German Australian Business Alliance and GABWA - the German-Australian Business Women Alliance. The Arts Evening has made space for an exploration of the positive impacts of artificial intelligence on learning a foreign language and bilingualism while the crowd pleasing Oktoberfest will showcase you our mini Bavaria experience. The language competition will take a new format with the support of the Goethe-Institute Australia, the German Kino Club will be there to satisfy the cravings of German cinephiles and you can enjoy three of Brisbane’s iconic bridges lit up in the colours of the German flag on 3 October.

Story Bridge, Brisbane

How it all began...

Brisbane’s German Honorary Consul Prof Michael Rosemann is a Professor for Innovation Systems and the Director of the Centre for Future Enterprise at the Queensland University of Technology. From a young age, he had a dream - to build bridges. Michael was fascinated with these connective constructs. Initially,  just the engineering kind as a Brückenbauingenieur, but that soon evolved to building bridges between cultures, ideas, and people. His passion for innovation and connection led to the founding of Brisbane German Week in 2016, the same year he took office.

From a local idea to national impact…

Michael and Claudia at German Week

In August 2016, Prof Michael Rosemann proposed the idea to create a German Week covering significant topics such as innovation, business, history and culture. Within just eight weeks, a vague idea became reality. A new multicultural event was born on 2 October 2016: Brisbane German Week #1. Since then, and over the last nine years, Brisbane German Week has become an integral part of Brisbane’s event calendar. In fact, the event has scaled up far beyond Queensland. In 2019 the language competition became an national event, since 2020 we have been hosting a national Science and Innovation Day (AGRN). In 2022, Adelaide German Week as well as Australia Week in Munich have been established inspired by our work. In 2024, Melbourne and Canberra are also getting creative joining the forces and in 2025, Perth is finally joining the family of German Weeks Australia
