German Unity Day

3 October is the Day of German Unity (Tag der Deutschen Einheit), Germany's National Day. It commemorates the reunification of Germany in 1990, when the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic were reunited after decades of division.

The reunification of Germany marked a defining moment in European history and remains a powerful symbol of freedom, democracy and peaceful change. Each year, German Unification Day is officially celebrated in the capital of the federal state holding the presidency of the Bundesrat (Federal Council), with festivities centred around the annual Bürgerfest (Citizens' Festival). In 2026, these celebrations will take place in Bremen under the motto "Viele Stärken, ein Land" ("Many Strengths, One Country"), bringing together visitors from across Germany for a diverse program of cultural, civic and community events.
